How many bottles do I need for home brew?

Most home brew kits produce approximately 23 litres of finished product.

Based on this you will use 24-26 750ml bottles or around 40-46 500ml bottles.

We generally use the 750ml Crown Top Bottle.

Can I use regular beer bottles for home brew?

Yes. There is a little bit of elbow grease involved in cleaning the bottles and removing the labels.

What's better - plastic or glass bottles?

Both have their advantages - which is better will depend on your personal preferences.

The plastic PET bottles are inexpensive, easier to fill and seal and are lighter. However we find that the plastic PET bottles don't hold carbonation as reliable so they are not ideal for long-term storage and they can only be used 3-5 times before they require replacing.

Glass home brew bottles hold carbonation more reliable and tend to protect the flavour and aroma characteristics of your brew better. The bottles are more durable and they can be used as many times as you like.

Do I need to put sugar in my bottles?

You need to add a source of fuel for secondary fermentation in your bottles, which is how you create carbonation in your brew.

We suggest you use carbonation drops which are a simple way to make sure you get the right amount sugar in each bottle.

How long will my home brew beer or cider last in bottles?

If you are using glass bottles, we generally advise customers that the flavour and aroma qualities of your beer or cider will fully mature around 8-12 weeks and remain stable up to 10 months.

Between 10-12 months we find the flavour qualities of the brew will start to diminish. This does not mean the brew has gone off and you can keep and drink your brews after 12-months - but we don't think they taste as good after this point.
