Black Rock Riwaka Pale Ale

The Black Rock Crafted Riwaka Pale Ale is a premium extract brewing kit created from our master brewer’s favourite pale ale recipe. Built on generous amounts of ale malt, Light Crystal, and Aurora specialty malts, this brew delivers a rich body, subtle caramel sweetness, and a pale brown pour with great depth of flavour.

About This Brew:

What makes this Pale Ale truly special is the hop bill. NZ Green Bullet hops are added at the boil to provide a firm, moderate-high bitterness that balances the malt sweetness. But the star of the show is the Riwaka™ dry hop addition. Renowned as one of New Zealand’s most sought-after hop varieties, Riwaka™ brings vibrant citrus character, infusing the beer with bold aromas of passionfruit, grapefruit, and zesty lime.

The result is a Pale Ale that’s refreshing, aromatic, and full of character. With its balanced malt backbone, crisp bitterness, and citrus-driven aroma, it’s a brew that stands tall whether enjoyed fresh from the keg or poured into a pint with friends.

Perfect for those who want a beer that’s classic at its core but elevated by uniquely New Zealand hops, the Black Rock Crafted Riwaka Pale Ale is a kit that delivers both tradition and innovation in every sip.

Looking for a food match? The Black Rock Riwaka Pale Ale goes Well With…

1. Mince and Cheese Pie: AKiwi classic elevated by the beer’s citrus hops, which cut through the hearty filling and flaky pastry.

2. Lamb Chops off the BBQ: The beer’s caramel malts balance the savoury richness of grilled lamb, while the citrus notes cut through the char.

3. Cheese Scones: The toasty malt character sits comfortably alongside savoury, buttery scones for a satisfying afternoon match.

4. Kumara Wedges: The gentle sweetness of kumara finds a perfect counterpoint in the Pale Ale’s moderate bitterness and crisp finish.

5. Green Lipped Muscles in Garlic Butter: The crisp bitterness balances the richness of the butter and enhances the briny freshness of NZ green-lipped mussels.

Additional Fermentables Required

To get the best from this brew, you’ll need to add fermentables. Choose one of the following options depending on your style preference:

Option One: The Basics Brew
Use Liquid Brewing Sugar or Dextrose.
For better body and head retention when using Dextrose, we recommend Premium Blend Light over straight dextrose.

Option Two: Crisp and Light
Use 1kg Extra Light Dry Malt Extract for a clean flavour profile, subtle malt character, and a refreshing, crisp finish.

Option Three: Smooth and Satisfying
For a fuller mouthfeel and smooth finish, use Liquid Malt Extract.
Choose Black Rock Ultra Light or Brick Road Extra Light.

Optional Extras

Boost your brew with these recommended extras for better flavour, fermentation, and finish:

Craft Yeast
Upgrade your fermentation by using a quality craft yeast.

Option One: If you dry hop this brew we would suggest the 2 x packets of SafAle S-23 (23g total) which is well suited to fruity expressions.

Option Two: If you are not dry hopping (or as an alternative if you are dry hopping) we suggest 2 x packets of the SafAle US-05 (23g total) yeast which is well regarded as a neutral and versatile ale yeast.

Yeast Nutrients
Add yeast nutrient to support a healthy fermentation, ensuring your yeast performs at its best for full attenuation and a consistent result.

Finings
For crystal-clear beer, use finings in the final 24–48 hours before bottling. This helps remove sediment, improves flavour stability, and gives your lager a polished, professional look.

Dry Hopping

For a craft-style finish, dry-hop this brew with 30-50g of your favourite hops.

Black Rock Crafted Riwaka Pale Ale is already dry-hopped with Riwakaâ„¢ hops – one of the most sought after varieties from NZ Hops Ltd for the unique citrus aromas it infuses into the beer – which has made it highly demanded by brewers around the world.

Bright and punchy – Double down with 50gms of additional Riwaka for an intense burst of passionfruit, grapefruit, citrus peel, and a touch of dank resin for added depth

Vivid and expressive – Add 30-50gms of Nelson Sauvin to amplify the Riwaka base with layers of gooseberry, white wine, and ripe tropical fruit for a brighter, more complex NZ hop profile.

Fresh & citrus forward – Add 30-50gms of Motueka to complement the Riwaka foundation with zesty lime, lemon peel, and soft tropical notes, creating a smooth, juicy, refreshingly bright pale ale.
