English Express is a rich, full-bodied journey into classic British brewing — built for cool evenings, hearty meals, and those moments that call for depth and character in a pint. This is a traditional English Porter turned up a notch, with bold malt complexity and a warming 6.2% ABV to match.

This recipe pack is built on the Black Rock Classic Porter, known for its deep brown hue and rounded malt profile. To elevate the body and boost the strength, we’ve added a dose of liquid brewing sugar, creating a smooth yet stronger finish that doesn’t sacrifice balance.

What really sets this brew apart is its malt-forward complexity. Expect layers of chocolate, caramel, toffee and big roasted and toasty notes — all riding on a low bitterness of just 16 IBU. With no additional hops added, the natural malt sweetness rides shotgun on the tracks, giving this porter a smooth and satisfying finish.

Fermentation stays true to style, with a clean, steady yeast profile that supports without interfering — allowing the rich malt notes to take centre stage.

What’s Included InThis Recipe:

  • Black Rock Classic Porter 1.7KG
  • Black Rock Rock Dark Liquid Malt Extract 1.7KG
  • Brew Tech Liquid Brewing Sugar 1KG
  • Mangrove Jacks M42 Strong Ale Yeast 20g total (2 packets)

This recipe includes all of the ingredients you require to ferment this brew. There are no additional fermentables required, for example dextrose or liquid malt extract. Additional ingredients may be required for bottling. 

 

Optional Extras (purchase seperately):

  • We suggest using Yeast Nutrient with this brew. Yeast nutrient will support a health fermentation.
  • You can add Lactose for a milk porter. This brew has a noticable malt sweetness and we would suggest a very conservative approach if you add lactose – less that 100g.

Special Instructions for Brewing This Recipe:

Expect your starting gravity to be 1.058-1.060 and expect a final gravity of 1.010-1.012. Target ABV for this brew is approximately 6.2%.

  • Follow brewing instructions included with the Black Rock Classic Porter.
  • Discard the yeast included with the Black Rock Classic Porter and use the M42 Strong Ale yeast provided. For best results ferment at 16-22 degrees celcius. We rehydrated the yeast prior to pitching for fermentation and we suggest using Yeast Nutrient with this brew (not included with recipe pack).
  • When mixing in fermenter fill to 23litres total volume.
  • We did not use finings with this brew but suggest cold crashing prior to bottling or kegging.
  • When bottling best practise is to rack off into a bottling bucket using a syphon.
  • Bottle condition for 10-14 days in a cool dry place. The hop flavours in this brew will be best when drunk between two and four weeks.
