Why use Crown Cap?

When it comes to bottling homebrewed beer, crown seals are a popular choice for many reasons. Here are some key benefits:

  1. Airtight Seal: Keeps your brew bubbly and fresh by locking out oxygen and locking in carbonation.

  2. Long Shelf Life: That perfect seal helps preserve flavour and fizz, meaning your beer stays better for longer.

  3. Cost-Effective: Affordable, especially in bulk — ideal for batch brewers.

  4. Simple to Use: Just pop one on your bottle and crimp it down with a hand or lever-style capper. Easy as.

  5. Tried and True: Used in commercial brewing for over a century. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

Using Crown Caps

  1. Sanitise the caps directly before bottling — a quick soak in no-rinse sanitiser will do the trick.

  2. Fill your clean, sanitised bottles with your finished brew, leaving about 2-3cm of headspace at the top.

  3. Place a cap on the top of each bottle, making sure it’s centered.

  4. Crimp the seal using a hand capper or bench capper, applying firm, even pressure.

  5. Check that the cap is secure and evenly crimped all around. If it’s loose or crooked, remove and re-cap with a new seal.

Crown Seal Fun Facts

Did You Know Crown Seals Have Been Around For Over 100 Years!

Crown seals, commonly known as crown caps, were a groundbreaking invention in the world of beverage packaging. Invented in 1892 by William Painter, an engineer from Baltimore, Maryland, these caps revolutionized the way carbonated drinks were sealed. Originally featuring a metal cap with a corrugated flange edge and a cork lining, crown seals provided an effective solution to prevent leakage and contamination, quickly becoming the standard for sealing bottles in the beverage industry.

The design has evolved over time, with the cork lining being replaced by plastic to improve reliability and longevity. Today, these seals are universally used across the globe, particularly in the brewing and soft drink industries. Made of metal with a plastic liner, crown seals are easy to apply with a specialized capping tool, ensuring the carbonation and flavor of beverages are perfectly preserved. Their simplicity and effectiveness have kept the design largely unchanged for over a century, making them a staple in beverage packaging.

In addition to their practical use, the caps have also gained a cultural aspect, becoming collectible items with various designs cherished by enthusiasts worldwide. They represent not just a means of sealing a bottle, but a century-old tradition of preserving the quality of beverages.
