What Are Flip Top Glass Bottles?

Reusable glass bottles sealed with a hinged ceramic or plastic cap and a rubber gasket. The cap is held in place with a wire bail that creates an airtight seal when closed. This makes them ideal for storing carbonated drinks like beer, cider, and kombucha, as well as still beverages like cold brew coffee, juice, or infused oils.

They’re popular in home brewing because they don’t require a separate bottle capper, are easy to open and reseal, and help maintain freshness and carbonation. Simply wash, sanitize, fill, and flip the top closed — it’s that easy.

Helpful Tip

When using carbonation drops we suggest using 750ml flip top bottles over the 500ml. The main reason is that carbonation drops are designed to be used in volumes of 335-350ml or 700-750ml.

Fun Facts About Swing Top Bottles

  • Invented in the 1800s: The swing top (also known as the “lightning stopper”) was invented by Charles de Quillfeldt, a German-American, and patented in the U.S. in 1874. It became popular because it was reusable, easy to open, and sealed better than corks.

  • Used by the OG brewers: Before crown caps became widespread, swing tops were one of the most common closures for beer bottles — especially in Europe. They were favoured by German and Belgian brewers for sealing strong ales and lagers.

  • Still huge in Germany: Flip top bottles are called “Bügelflasche” in German (literally, “swing-arm bottle”) and remain iconic for beers like Grolsch, which still uses them today.

  • Carbonation saver: The airtight seal on swing tops made them ideal for carbonated drinks long before refrigeration or pressure-controlled bottling lines existed.

  • Bottle meets growler: Some modern craft breweries use large-format swing top bottles (1L+) as growlers, offering a stylish and resealable option for take-home beer.
